Making comments, either in the real life, or in the internet – through blogs or other community sites, can be a tough shell to crack.
You could end up, unknowingly stepping on a path of shredded glass if you are not careful. Here are some tips that can be a guide to making constructive criticism online.
1. Read before you type. Yes folks, some people actually just type something up instead of reading on and commenting their idea on the topic. It’s not that hard to leave something- such as your idea on the subject, after reading. Most personal posts are easy to comment on, specially if you can relate to the event that is being stated in it.
2. Hold the axes. Some people think that giving constructive criticism gives them the right or authority to say anything. They tend to forget that some people are not that thick on the skin. Instead of helping that person to grow and imrpove – say their art or writing, they end up hurting the person and end up stopping what they do.
It would probably be best to hold critical comments until you know the person better. If that’s just how you roll, then try to hold them off for a bit, for they won’t understand your true intentions.
What if they asked for it? Could I? Well, it’s your choice… ^_^
3. Be constructive, not destructive. Comments are a good means of feedback. Most people love seeing that people left comment on their works. It makes them feel that people actually read their stuff or appreciated their work. Also, some people view comments as a way to improve themselves. Should you see flaws that needs repairing, lightly point out the said item.
Comments such as “Epic Fail” on a drawing that does not meet your ideal standards are best not posted at all. Wouldn’t it be better to say that “You need more practice on story plots.”?
Also, there are some comments that should be worded appropriately. Terms such as “If it was me,” “I would have done it like this…” or similar items should be avoided. We must forget that it is their work, not ours…
Comments are important both in real life and in the internet. It gives us feed backs of things that we, ourselves, do not see, which others do. Good comments can go a long way in helping others. Phrasing them appropriately can also be the big difference in how they take your comments.
