I have been trying to customize my gallery display for quite some time.
I have first started out with using manual image posts. That was troublesome. Specially with the use of wordpress, I thought “maybe there is an easier way to automate this…”
I looked at theotaku.com and said to myself, “I want a gallery thumbnail similar to this…”
So I searched the web for something…
I first found NextGen Gallery. I was impressed. I just upload images and bam! Gallery created. It’s fun and all, but there’s one thing I noticed… It displays the images in a slideshow… Hmmmm… Not exactly what I wanted. But this will do for now.
As I worked on my site for some time, I realized that since the slideshow is in one page, any comment regarding a work will be shown on one page… I thought there must be a better way for this to work… I need a separate entry for each work, then display it all in one page as a thumbnail…
That lead me to Justin Tadlock’s Query Post Plug-in. Incidentally, he is also the creator of the Hybrid Framework Template which is this site’s base framework. So I gave it a try.
First, I needed to make a new widget area for the hybrid theme. I managed to do it by replicating the Widget Template code and creating a new one in my child theme function page. Then, I placed the widget in the new widget area and tweaked the settings…
I got what I wanted! A page that shows only the category of the post I wanted… However, it does not display the thumbnail only. I got to the source code and stripped off the coding. I might regret it someday, so I backed-up the original code. I removed everything that pulls out the post, except the title and the thumbnail.
OK, things are working a bit how I wanted it to… But, I can’t seem to arrange it the way I want to, with the thumbnail above the Title… I guess this will mean I still need to tweak this some more… Hopefully, I’ll get the results that I want (and soon).
